Hello all, I have an HP TouchSmart 300-1007 desktop bought in 2010. It has recently stopped recognizing disks, both data or DVD movies. I have performed full scans for viruses and malware, checked device manager (which showed it was working properly), and searched for updated drivers for the DVD drive. I started doing some research on the drive that came with this system, and it looks as if this is a common problem and the fix is a replacement. I have done searches for the drive, but have only found ones for Dell laptops. The drive is an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7640S. Would the ones I found for Dell work, or is there a compatible replacement. Thanks for any help.

It could be a bad drive or just dirty. Dust gets drawn in through the cracks and crevices around the disk tray and eventually can obstruct the laser. Try cleaning the drive. I use an air compressor properly fitted with a moisture and particulate filter, but you can also try a can of compressed dusting gas. Just be sure to hold the can level so you don't spew liquefied gases in there.
That is actually a Sony made drive used by several notebook makers.
Sadly, being new here, I cannot post any links for 7 days.
So close the spaces and you can see the drive here:
