I noticed that there was a difference in my ip shown in www.whatismyip.com and the one that I saw when I used ipconfig. Which is the correct one? Could someone please explain this difference to me?

Hello,

This happens when you have a network setup in your home or there is a routing device which is more a case with most of the Broadband users where you have an internal IP Address assigned to your computer by the Routing device and it has an external IP Address (assigned by ISP) with which it talks to the internet.

So the one in msconfig is a Private IP Address and the on you see on whatismyip.com is called a Public IP Addresses.

Moved to Internet & Networking.

Ok. Which ip do I make use of if I want to link two applications from different computers together? By the way, what is the difference between the usage of the two ips?

If you want to link the two applications via your network use the private IP address, if it's over the internet use the public IP address (for this you need static IP).

The private IP is for identifying a computer from each other.

There is a similar ip search site called IP-Details.com to check our External ip address. Here it display IP address, ISP, Location, Country and so on,...
