Virus/Malware help

I'm working on my parents old Hp dekstop. It's an older pc, probably about 10 years but has been running fine lately. One morning, my mom said the screen of the computer was blank like it was asleep, and wouldn't respond to moving the mouse to wake it up. This was accompanied by a loud whirring. Other than that it's running very slowly. I just downloaded Avira Free for them as their old AV subscription had expired and it frequently shows alerts. MBAM hasn't found anything, and nothing really popped up on ADW. I think this is a virus/malware issure, but I wouldn't rule out anything to do with the hardware. Would really appreciate some help.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

That whirring sounds like it could be the hard drive or the fans.
You can start by defragging your hard drive. If you need help with this, please let me know. (SSD means Solid State Drive.)

It's been doing the same thing every morning, appearing to be in sleep mode and not waking up unless you unplug it and plug it back in. Gonna run the JRT right now. Get back to you in a bit

Here's the JRT scan... it stopped midway and asked me if I wanted to restart the pc because of a bad module. I clicked no to continue the scan, then restarted afterwards.

Okay, did it. I had it fix errors and scan and attempt recovery. it had me restart the computer to carry through with it. It took a while, but when i came back it was loaded up, so I assume it worked. No log file or report though

It's seems to be working okay, maybe even slightly better than usual... it still stays in sleep mode every morning and won't wake up unless physically unplugged and plugged back in. This leads me to think it is actually a hardware problem. Maybe a changed setting on the computer or maybe that it just needs to be turned off at night from now on

The best thing you can do for your computer is to shut it down occasionally unless you have some reason for keeping it on all the time. I shut all my computer down every night. Let's do some cleanup.

Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.



Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.



This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)
