Hi, I've been hearing advertisements when no pop-up or browser windows are open. I'm pretty sure my computer is infected with something that is causing this to happen. I've run several anti-virus programs, including Norton Security Suite, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Malwarebytes, which have each detected and fixed several issues. However, I'm still hearing sounds from the advertisements every few minutes. Please let me know how I can fix this! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hello, and welcome to GeekPolice.

Please note the following information about the malware forum:

  • From this point on, please do not make any more changes to your computer; such as install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc. - unless advised by the staff I noted above.
  • Please do not ask for help elsewhere (in this site or other sites). Doing so can result in system changes, which may not show up in the logs you post.
  • If you have already asked for help somewhere, please post the link to the topic you were helped.
  • We try our best to reply quickly, but for any reason we do not reply in two days, do one of two things:

Download Bootkit Remover to your Desktop.

  • You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/
  • After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double-click on remover.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users, right click on remover.exe and click Run As Administrator.
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
  • Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  • Press CTRL C
  • Open a Notepad and press CTRL V
  • Post the output back here.

After I entered "%userprofile%\Desktop\remover.exe" fix \.\PhysicalDrive0, a window appeared asking me to allow immediate reboot after disinfection, and I clicked "yes." A black screen (remover.exe) appeared with the following data:

Bootkit Remover version 1.0.0.1
(c) 2009 eSage Lab
www.esagelab.com

CreateFile() ERROR 2
ERROR: Can't open physical disk device.

Press any key to quit...

Afterwards, my computer did not reboot itself, even though I thought it was supposed to. I'm not sure if I did anything wrong, or if that error message was supposed to show up, but I still re-ran remover.exe and received the following log, which looks exactly the same as the log I had posted previously:

Bootkit Remover version 1.0.0.1

Please let me know what I need to do next. Thanks so much!

Try this command in the run box instead:

"%userprofile%\Desktop\remover.exe" fix

After entering that command in the run box, a black screen appeared with this data:

Bootkit Remover version 1.0.0.1

www.esagelab.com

USSAGE:
remover.exe fix

Press any key to quit...

Afterward, I ran remover.exe and here is the log from that:

This log seems to be the same as previous ones. Please let me know what I should do next. Thanks!

Let's try this.

Please open Notepad and enter in the following:
@ECHO OFF
START remover.exe fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
EXIT

Then, click File > Save as...
Save as remove.bat to the same location as remover.exe.
Choose Save as type... All Files.
Click Save.

Then, exit Notepad.

Double-click on remove.bat.

Allow it to go in to its process.

Once finished, please re-run Remover.exe and post a new log.

After opening remove.bat, I received the following log:

ERROR: No standard boot code found for your OS.

Press any key to quit...

Then, re-ran remover.exe and received the same log as previous ones:

Thanks for your continuous help. What should I do next?

Oh that is not so good.

Please download Stealth MBR Rootkit Detector by GMER from GMER.net, and save to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbr.exe to start the program.
  • When done scanning, it will save a log on the Desktop called mbr.log.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Here are the contents of mbr.log:

Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: error reading MBR
kernel: MBR read successfully

I'm guessing another error occurred? What should I do next? Thanks!

Please open Command Prompt (Start > Run and type CMD and press OK [Vista/7: Start search: CMD and press enter])
Enter the following in to the black box, pressing enter after each line:

Code:

mbr -f

exit

Post a log (MBR.log).

descriptionHearing advertisements when no browser window is open EmptyRe: Hearing advertisements when no browser window is open

I'm not sure if I'm following the directions properly or typing the code into the black box correctly. After entering "mbr -f", I received this message:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Janet>mbr -f
'mbr' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\Users\Janet>

Then, I entered "exit" and created the following mbr.log:

Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: error reading MBR
kernel: MBR read successfully

descriptionHearing advertisements when no browser window is open EmptyRe: Hearing advertisements when no browser window is open

Make sure MBR.exe is on your Desktop, then do this:

In Command Prompt, type these, pressing enter after each line:

cd C:\Users\Janet\desktop
mbr.exe -f
exit

It should launch a log afterward.

The same log launches after I type in Command Prompt:

Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: error reading MBR
kernel: MBR read successfully
