I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8, unable to get it up and running, receive blue screen with message "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info. and then we'll restart for you." Then comes back with the Toshiba Leading Innovation screen along with a msg at the bottom "Preparing Automatic Repair" then it goes blank as in a black screen. I need to get into safe mode, but don't know how with Windows 8

I had to look that one up myself. Try Shift-F8 instead of F8.

You should then see a series of screens. Here's the path to follow:

    [1]Advanced Repair Options
    [2]Troubleshoot
    [3]Advanced Options
    [4]Windows Startup Settings

Then Restart

On reboot, you should see the familiar Advanced Boot Options window.

I really haven't had to deal with any W8 problems yet.

Were you able to get to any of the Windows listed?  I'm wondering if you can force Safe Mode by getting to a command prompt as this article suggests. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/repair-recovery/a/force-or-stop-safe-mode-windows.htm

Are you familiar with chkdsk? You want to try that also.

Try booting to your install disk. Click past the language/keyboard screen. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options. Get to the Command Prompt and type in chkdsk /r. Then hit the Enter key.

This should check your disk for errors. That sometimes fixes situations like this.
