Dear GeekPolice,

My parents have been having connectivity problems with their internet. I have been unable to figure out what the problem is, and I am hoping that you can help. They have a Dell XPS8300 which runs Windows 7 Home Edition. They have an Embarq 660 modem. Two different laptops (and multiple smart phones) in the house are able to connect to the wireless internet, however, the desktop PC is not able to connect to the internet (it says “no connections are available”). According to my parents, this happened abruptly, approximately 3 months ago. Prior to that, they had internet access on the desktop PC with the current set up they have now without any problems. When choosing “troubleshoot/Windows Network Diagnostics”, it recommends plugging an Ethernet cable into this computer for further diagnostics, however, after doing this with two cables, one of which is out-of-the-box brand new, it simply states that “a network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken”, and not much help is provided beyond that. I downloaded the latest version of Malwarebytes on a flash drive and ran a full scan, which also showed nothing (I could post the results if this would be helpful). The computer itself is running fine otherwise. I’m really not sure why this computer would stop being able to access the internet. Any help that you could provide me would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know what other information you would need me to post.
