Hi guys. I am having a problem with one of my external hard drives. Suddenly and without notice and on all 3 of my computers the drive stopped working. I cannot even see the drive appear on mycomputer when I plug the thing in. The power light comes on and I use various OS's and the thing is invisible on all of them. Can anyone out there help me?

Sure sounds like the drive has failed. It may be just the enclosure or the power supply for the device. If it's the enclosure, you can remove the actual hard drive that is inside the enclousure and attah it to another enclosure. What model is it?

One thing you can easily do it to swap out the USB cable (assuming it connects via a USB cable).

Thanks for the reply.
I took the hard drive out and put it in an enclosure, nothing happened. I downloaded and ran icare recovery which only allowed me to save 10 files. So, I know the info is on the hard drive but cannot access it. Any more ideas anyone?

Can you see the drive in Disk Management?

To check, connect the drive to one of your computers. I see you have XP, so using an XP computer, right click on My Computer, to to MANAGE. From there, go to Disk Management. See if the drive shows up and check the status.

Also see if the drive shows up in My Computer. If it does, right click on it and go to PROPERTIES. Go to the TOOLS tab and click on ERROR-CHECKING. Check the two boxes - automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Click Start.

Hi again. Yes, it see's the hard drive in Disk Management. It says the drive is healthy.

When I try error checking on the hard drive nothing happens. I can tick the two boxes, auto fix file system errors and Scan, but nothing happens. The window just disappears.

I've seen something similar a few months ago. Nearest I could figure is that the Master Table File got corrupted. I was not able to fix it. I had to recover all the files with a recovery program and reformat the drive.

My notes show that Disk Management reported that the drive was a healthy 80 GB drive with 0 used and 0 available.

I think I used this utility to try to rebuild the MTF from the mirror, but it didn't work.

The user may have to format the hard propel to recover from the external hard drive malfunction; although, he will lose all the data stored in the hard propel. But the problem is retrieving the facts and figures from the corrupted hard drive. There is not anything to be concerned about, as professional data recovery service companies often have good external hard drive recovery advice, but it can arrive at a cost.
