I have a Dell laptop that started giving me trouble yesterday. when turned on, the computer says that it cannot start. Then it goes into "Startup Repair". If I try to cancel this process, it says that the process cannot be stopped.

Then it sits on that screen for as long as I will leave it. (at least 16 hours, overnight + plus work) When I try to restart, it goes through the process again.

I am assuming that it has a virus of some kind.

Hi there!

OTLPE + Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here

  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads Windows 7 will not start Smiley
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.

Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy

  • Insert the flash drive with FRST on it
  • Locate the flash drive and run FSRT
  • The tool will start to run.

Windows 7 will not start FRST2

  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button. It will do its scan and save a log on your flash drive.
  • Close out of the message after that, then type in the text services.exe in to the "Search:" text box. Then, press the Search file(s) button, just as below:
Windows 7 will not start Frst2
When done searching, FRST makes a log, Search.txt, on the C:\ drive or on your flash drive.
  • Type exit in the Command Prompt window and reboot the computer normally
  • FRST will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive and also the search.txt logfile, please copy and paste the logs in your reply.

Dragon Master Jay
Sorry that I did not log back in. I ended up having a hard drive issue. I changed the hard drive. I should have come back and told you.

Now, however, I am getting the blue screen of death. It started this afternoon. The computer stopped working, then went into the blue screen. Although it did not stay there long enough to read. Then the computer shut down. When I restart it, it works for about 5 minutes, then goes back into the shutdown again. I am thinking virus?

I got it downloaded and run. When I ran the FRST program, it created the search.txt file, but not the FRST.txt file. I am going to try and run the program again.

well - shortly after this, I had the computer sitting beside me, and I heard a double beep. The message said that a hard drive could not be found. Which is really frustrating, this drive is less than one month old.

From what it sounds like, the hard drive has dysfunction. Can you contact the manufacturer who sent you the drive? That shouldn't happen. Goofy

Yeah, I can get back to them. It has been less than a month. I appreciate your help.

Another question for you. If i start the computer in safe mode, it works fine, and never shuts down. The same if I use the OTLPE system. The computer never shuts down. Only in the normal mode of windows. Should I possible try to reload windows, the virus scan?

descriptionWindows 7 will not start EmptyRe: Windows 7 will not start

more_horiz
We can check it out, but the double-beep is a bad sign usually.

Go into OTLPE and start up the OTL application. Click on Quick Scan, save the log and post it in your next reply.
