When I try & "Send/receive" in WLM I'm asked to input my password and get this error:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Talktalk (brianXXXXXXX1) account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR Authentication failed.
Server: 'mail.talktalk.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC92
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

- brianXXXXXXX1 is a censored version of my e-mail address (first part before the "@" sign)

Thru a Google search I see this is a recurring problem with various ISP's e-mail systems that use Outlook or WLM. There are a couple of software downloads (registry checkers) that promise to sort '0x800CCC90' at about $30 but as they're advertised as "free" and then want 30 bucks their credibility is already compromised!

I've tried to follow corrections posted by my ISP (TalkTalk.net) and MS but to no avail.

Can you help, please?

Firstly, try to log into your account at www.talktalk.net. If you can log in, then your do know your password. From there, you can contact TalkTalk for help.

Alternately, you can create a new user account in WLM and re-enter all the appropriate information. I've seen this work with other email servers. For some reason, creating the new WLM account works.

Thanks Jan2011. I resolved this myself but the solution may assist others.

If when you add an e-mail address you let Windows mail automatically populate the Server Settings when you look at the Accounts/Properties on the 2nd tab "Servers" the Email username is set as "brianXXXXXXX1". If this is changed to "brianXXXXXXX1@talktalk.net" the problem is resolved.
