from my laptop to my TV with an s cable . all I get is bright lines that change ,from wide to narrow or spaced more at times ,however no pictures all I wanted was to clone my laptop and TV, could this mean that I defiantly need a converter box?

Most laptops have a key to switch video from the laptop display to the video output. I think it only affects only the VGA output, not the S-Video output, but I'm not sure. See if you can locate that key and toggle it a few times. It's usually a Fn key + one of the F keys at the top of the laptop.
