I am trying to help a friend, I brought her computer to my house and replaced a bad stick of ram. Everything worked fine after this.

I started the machine many times for updates and scans, to be sure her problem was only ram. The machine started and ran like a champ.

I am sure this is not due to malware.

I took it to her house earlier today (45 minutes away) and it would not go past Dell splash screen. It would almost load to the end of the bar and freeze. (no keys would work)

Never had this happen before... Let me think
The computer is a dell optiplex running XP pro

Hi houndmom,

This could be due to bad BIOS, try flashing your BIOS and updating it.

if the fix "INEEDHELP" suggested doesn't relief the problem, there is this free RAM utility tool at memtest86.com download the iso image and burn it to a disk, then boot the computer using the utility. this will NOT fix the problem but it will determine if RAM is at fault
