I'm back from school from Christmas Break and my parents need me to fix their PC which today started displaying severe virus symptoms. It is an older PC with Windows XP and Verizon Security Suite. Pretty sure I installed Malware Bytes on there. I would like to avoid losing any documents on the computer, if it were my PC I would just wipe it clean because I back up most stuff important, but my parents have some stuff they need on there. Anyway here goes writing from my laptop:

Upon logging in there is a Black desktop screen with no Desktop shortcuts. I slew of pop ups come up all under the title "Windows- Delayed Write Failed" with a message reading like the following but each with a different system32 file "Failed to save all the components for the file \\System32\\00003d77. The file is corrupted or unreadable. This error may be caused by a PC hardware problem." Usually around 10 pop up immediately.
There is one pop up error under the title "Windows detected a hard disk problem" with the message "A potential failure may cause loss of files, applications and documents stored on the hard disk. It is highly recommended to scan and solve HDD problems before continuing using (sic) PC." It gives me the options Scan and fix or cancel and reboot. Svan and fix brings up one of those fake-looking virus scanning things "system check"

I can get to no programs, and pretty much am limited to windows explorer. I tried system restore but it wouldn't let me click next, I could only choose a restore date and when I clciked next it didn't register. I would greatly appreciate any help. I'm stumped!
