Greetings I have a problem with my monitor. I've been having the problem for about two months. Ever since the beginning of November or so I would boot up my PC, but I always turn the monitor on first. This problem started when one day I turned the monitor on and the power light on my monitor blinked on and off. When I turned the PC on the monitor would still be doing the flickering and power light going on and off. The flicker was extremely faint and the monitor was black. On that day I turned the PC on and off several times before finally getting it into safe mode. In safe mode I checked for viruses and found nothing, defragmented my drive, and then did a system restore. After restoring, the PC and monitor seemed fine. However, the day after and most days afterward the monitor would start doing the same thing again.

Although most of the time now the display on the monitor would come back usually at the Windows login screen. After that, once I was in Windows everything would be fine. I also updated the drivers and got Windows updates. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 2220wm. It's about 4 years old I'm sure though how old it really is. I know it was built in 2007 though. My PC is an Alienware Aurora with Windows Vista. I got the PC in 2009 so it's 2 years old.

I haven't been able to hook up my monitor to my Dad's Laptop or my Mom's PC to see if it works on their machines to see if the monitor is the problem or if there's something wrong with my PC because they've been using their PC's/Laptop a lot and have been busy and have done all they can to help me. Now the thing is this problem of the display going away from my monitor usually only has been happening in startup/boot up when I turn the PC on or when the power saving option of the monitor sleeping/display turning off. I don't think there's anything I might have done to the PC or the monitor to make it do that, but then again you never know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Also of note: everything else on my PC works fine including the graphics. Whenever I've been playing any PC games or watching DVD's or things like that I have not had any problems and so far this problem hasn't caused any damage or anything to my PC except the fact that the display goes away during boot up, then comes back, or didn't come on in the first place when I either turned on the monitor or the PC, but it does come back and stays on until I turn it off that is. I'm not sure what the cause could be or what to do to fix it. Thank you in advance for any help.

It's hard to diagnose without connecting another monitor to the computer. If the problem goes away, then you have a monitor issue.

When your computer starts, the monitor should come out of standby. This is usually indicated by the power button changing color.
