wireless home network

My dad will be getting cable internet soon and i am going to set up a wireless network for him but heres my question: He only has laptops is it necessary to leave a PC wired to the wireless router for the internet to work or could i do the initial setup wired to one of the laptops and then unhook it and be done with it?

No it is not. The only requirements are that you have the router plugged into the modem. Most routers will require you to temporarily plug your computer into the router with the modem unplugged during setup then plugging the modem in after setup. After that you should be good to go. Usually you get a quick guide(a paper you unfold with 5 steps or something short with pictures) which will guide you through it.
