Let's collect all the bad stuff here...

ESET Online Scan

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hey,

this is what the log said:
ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

I remember it found 2 variants of Dealio and a sweetIM toolbar thing. However, firefox still has the toolbar. Would removing it normally be enough?

Also, I rebooted after the scan, to see if the usual Search Settings thing popped up (it didn't). However windows wanted to install some updates (one of which was Windows 7 SP1). I stopped it, in case I had to wait for the all clear before updating anything (that seems to be the routine, from some of the threads I saw).

Also,a little annoyance is that the wallpaper keeps changing to black. But I suspect that it's because the version of Windows I have is not genuine (it keeps saying that). The laptop went to the shop ok, but came back with an ungenuine copy of windows =/ Anyway, I'm just asking to confirm if this is so, or if there is some other hand behind it.

Anyway, from the little poking around I did, everything seems fine, but I guess that's up to the expert to decide Big Grin

Thanks Smile...

You have what is called a System Locked Preinstallation license now, which is usually when an OEM installation gets redistributed on to the wrong computer.

It means it is not genuine.

I would recommend to contact the Activation Center at Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929

Hi, I'll do that then, thanks Smile...

So are we finished? From what I'm experiencing, nothing 'strange' is happening to the laptop...
