My laptop died, only have a blue screen. I'm going to replace the hard drive. What is the best way to copy the data and programs from the old drive to the new one? Thanks!

Hi,
Are you sure laptop are dead ? What model of laptop do you have ? Why did you decide to replace HDD ?

You can not copy programs, applications or games. You can only copy documents, data like movies, music etc..

It's a Dell Inspiron 1420. I've tried to power it up several times and can't get past the blue screen. I took it to a local IT repair shop and they agreed that the hard drive was shot. Should I check something else to verify that it is the hard drive?

If I replace the hard drive, I still need to transfer the data, is there a better way of doing this over another?

Thank you.

If your HDD id dead, you can not transfer data to another one. That's the problem. IT Repair often make mistakes when computer comes to their diagnostics, because they do not have time to check everything, and usually say that the problem is in hardware. There is soo many programs for HDD diagnostic and Repair/Recovery!

Are you tried to repair Windows XP ? I wondering can you get screenshot of blues screen ? Do you know what error look like ?

If you like, I could give you a instructions to check your HDD and fix bad sectors or corrupted system files.

I'm willing to try and see if it works. I'd love to save the data. There's a lot of pics and such that I don't want to loose. I still need to pick up the laptop from the repair shop.

I found pretty nice article about hard drive recovery. Check this link bellow :
http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2005/12/hard-drive-recovery-utilities-when-you.html

You can download software for recovery on this link :
http://www.pcinspector.de/default.htm?language=1

Here is the instructions :
http://www.pcinspector.de/FileRecovery/instructions.htm?po=2&language=1

Important!
To be able to use PC INSPECTORâ„¢ File Recovery 4.x you need a working WINDOWST System. Never install the current version on the drive from which you intend to recover data! The software must be installed and run on a second, independent drive.

Hi Murraymccourt,
Install the old hard drive into another computer as slave.
If it shows up in 'My Computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data on it with a data recovery program to avoid losing them.I have succeed with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage etc.You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com
If the hard drive can't be detected, you can try this way.Put the hdd in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer overnight. Then while it's still cold plug it into the computer and you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And run the recovery program to recover your data on it.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover the data or not is not guarantee.
I think this article will help.
How To Recover Lost Data From Crashed Hard Drive?

Good Luck!
