Hi I am running Windows XP Professional not Windows XP (dont' know if it makes a difference). I followed the "Remove MS Removal Tool [Remaval Guide]'s" instructions. Everything seemed to be working well. In Step 12 after successfully installing & running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware the software required me to restart my CPU which I clicked yes when prompted. The system restarted automatically in normal mode. I was brought to the ctrl, alt, delete screen & prompted to enter my user name and password. I did then as my CPU began to install my preferences windows suddenly shut down and I was redirected to a Blue Screen that stated:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart you computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make srue it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

***STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF78A2524, 0XC000000E, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Since then I have attempted to restart my computer in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, last Known Good configuration (yoru most recent settings that worked), and Start Windows Normally to no avail. Everytime I am redirected to the above mentioned blue screen. I can not even get to were I can download the OTL software to upload my logs to this forum. Please help.

Hi DragonMaster Jay,

Thank you for responding quickly. I can not get to any desktop on my CPU. I have attempted to restart my computer in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, last Known Good configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and Start Windows Normally to no avail. Everytime I am redirected to the above mentioned blue screen. I cannot do anything from that screen I don't see my mouse pointer. The only way I have been able to reboot at this point is by manually turning the CPU off by holding in the power button until the CPU turns off. If I download the Combofix software onto a disk with my computer boot it from a disk even if I can not access the desktop?

Sounds like we're dealing with TDL4 here, a major infection.

Tell me if the blue screen goes away after doing these steps...

You'll have to do this on another computer which has CD burning access...

Download RC.ISO and save it somewhere you can find it.

Alternate link

Download MagicISO and install it.

Start MagicISO. When it asks you to register, just close that window...the
program should remain open. Click on "File" and then on "Open"...navigate to the RC.ISO file you downloaded, select it, and click "Open".

Click "File" on the toolbar and choose "Save As". Name the file RCplus and save it somewhere you can find it.

Put a blank CD-R disk in your CD burner and close the tray...when the AutoPlay window opens, close it.

Click "Tools" on the toolbar and choose "Burn CD/DVD with ISO". In the CD/DVD Image file area, click the little folder, navigate to the newly created
RCplus.iso image file, and click "Open". In the CD/DVD Writing Speed
drop-down menu, choose the top 8X setting. Format should have "Mode 1"
selected...if not, select it. Click on the "Burn It!" button.

Once this disk is burned, put it in the machine you're working on and restart. Boot to the CD and enter the Recovery Console.

When there, do this:

type in "fixmbr" and hit Enter.

Type 'y' if asked to, and allow it to do it's job.

Once it's done that and shows the next bit for another command, type "exit"

This will reboot your machine again, allow it to boot normally this time.

I could not use the CD I created per your instructions above to boot. I found an operating System CD which came with my cpu. I used this operating system CD and was able then to access the Recovery Console. I followed your instructions from there by typing "fixmbr" etc. ... after typing the final "exit" command I attempted to reboot my machine to no avail. now the cpu continually reboots.

Try to fix the MBR one more time and tell me what happens...

I followed your instructions. I am getting the same result. The monitor shows a black screen with the Windows XP Icon in the middle just like it is starting up correctly. Below the icon, I see a bar with a blude light running across it. When the bar is 1/3 of the way accross the CPU automatically restarts. When the CPU auto restarts it takes me to a black screen that shows the following msg.:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automtically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Know Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Wiondows normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the hghlight to your choice.
Seconds until Windows starts: 30"

When the countdown gets to "0" the CPU attempts to start Windows (The monitor shows a black screen wiht the Windows XP Icon in the middle just like it is starting up correctly. Below the icon I see a bar with a blude light running across it. When the bar is 1/3 of the way accross the CPU automatically restarts. When the CPU auto restarts it takes me to the black screen again with the msg. above). This repeats continuosly.

In order for me to enter the recovery counsol, I have to boot from CD. This entails tapping F9 when the Boot screen first appears before the black screen.

Also I noticed that when I type F8 at the boot up screen I get the following menu of options:

Widows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Widows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the hghlight to your choice."

I have tried selecting Disable automatic restart on system failure. When I do this, the CPU takes me to a black screen as follows:

"Please select the operationg system to start:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Presse ENTER to choose.

For troubleshooting and advance startup options for Windows, press F8.

Disable automatic restart on system failure."

If I press Enter instead of F8 where the CPU asks what operating sytem to access, the CPU takes me to a blue screen that says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart you computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make srue it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
