my laptop has not been connecting to the internet for some time. It connects to the wireless router but has no internet access. I took it to a PC repair shop last week and they have said that its being caused by a virus. They offered to fix it for £65 or to restore it to factory settings for £55. I told them that I had already tried the restore to factory settings route and that it hadn't worked. The technician gave me a knowing smile and said that it wouldn't solve the problem unless I knew what to do with the virus. I said I would think about his offer to remove the virus and brought the lap top away with me. I wanted to try and get an idea what sort of virus I might be looking at and how easy it would be to do it myself before I give them the go ahead as £65 is an awful lot of money to find at the moment.

I've read the posts about the steps to take before posting, but I can't do any of the scans as instructed because I can't download anything to be able to perform them. I have practically nothing on the laptop as I didn't bother to put much back on after doing the restore factory settings procedure. I've considered trying to download the software to a USB stick but my skills are limited and I don't know how to run the programmes from the USB stick.

I would be grateful for any help - even if its only a recommendation that I stump up the cash and get the man at the shop to do the job.

Hello.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

its my laptop that is affected and I can't download OTL on to it to do the scan as it has no internet connection. I can download it to my desk top but then can't work out how to get it to my laptop.

it doesn't open. This is the procedure I have followed:

Went to the "read this topic" thread on GeekPolice
located link to download OTL.
right mouse clicked and selected SAVE AS
saved to USB stick
took USB stick to the laptop
located the file that downloaded (called read this before posting)
double clicked the file - it is just images. There doesn't seem to be anything there that is software to run.

Okay lets try this instead.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste BOTH LOGS back here, use more than one post if needed.

I just couldn't find a way round getting the downloadable software onto a USB stick to then make it work on my laptop so I gave in in the end and took it to the shop to sort out and get rid of the virus.

It worked in the shop and it connected to a network and to the internet but having brought it home and tried to use it , the same problem is still there. It will connect to my network but will not give internet access

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using ISO Burner.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings

  • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

I don't think the problem is a virus anymore as I've just paid out £65 for a full factory restore and virus removal. I don't actually think it ever had a virus. The laptop has hardly been used and even then its only used on sights like ebay and iplayer. I know it hasn't been used on sites that make catching a virus more likely and we don't even use it for reading emails or anything like that. And its not like I was running it with virus protection. I had the upto date version of Norton 360 on it. The lap top worked fine but has not connected to the internet since we changed our broadband to Virgin cable broadband from AOL ADSL broadband.
