Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

Adobe Reader 9.4.2
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Then download and install Adobe Reader X

How is the machine running now?

i had to uninstall avg on a previous step, as it would not suspend as suggested.
i have installed you suggested product for now.

the machine still takes about 7 minutes to boot, and (for example) explorer takes another 3-4 minutes to load.

once an application loads, it seems to work fairly well.

before "virus day" the machine booted in 30 seconds and explorer would load in seconds.

so i guess all in all it's good from far, but far from good.

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

seems to me there is a lot of crap pinned to the start menu...is there a way to unpin it?
i also tried to uninstall lavasoft "ad aware" but cannot get it to leave quietly. suggestions?

Reboot normally. How is the machine running now?

hi,

still about 7 minutes to boot and maybe a minute or so to open explorer. after the program opens it is slow for about another minute, but then seems to operate at a normal speed (or at least faster than i can type)

should i maybe get someone local to look at the hardware? or are there other software things to try?

so... a little knowledge makes me a dangerous typer....

with a bit of mr. google's help i found the system configuration utility tab that runs what programs start.

i went in and unchecked the "ad aware" since it was showing "start pending" though the machine was running for 1/2 hour.

checked apply and re-booted

the machine booted in 30 sec. and explorer opened virtually instantaneously, and worked normal immediately.

so... the machine displayed a message saying i had modified the configuration, and would be running in "whatever" mode, should i wish to undo the changes i made, and would display this message each time it booted until i told it i was satisfied with the change.
i left it alone.

then the next box that appears is the system config utility box and it is now showing " selective startup" and a full green box in the "load system services box" where the others all have check marks.....the first time i went into this it was showing "normal startup" - load all services

do you suppose i should now be launching "system restore" or accept the changes i made?

the machine seems 100% now, but i thought i should ask someone who knows what i did instead of really messing it all up.

what say you?
