descriptionSolvedADSL connection drop off from time to time.

I have just recently (2 months ago) installed ADSL Broadband and since then my connection drop off about every second day or sometimes every 24 hours. It mainly happens when I'm not using my computer.( It's only dropped off 2 time while I'm online) I find sometimes, that when I switch on my computer , I have no connection so I switch off the power supply to my TP-Link modem for a minute and then when I switch it back on , I have a connection and then it usually stays good for another 2 days.
I have a feeling the drop off is due to the telephone company's connection or my ISP's connection. It may be anything but I can't figure out why it drops off.

I reckon it probably a simple fix but so far I have not been able to fix it.
Can you help please? Please (puppy eyes)

Hi Albert.

Are you sitting behind a router (wireless or cable connected)?

Or is your ADSL setup: Phoneline outlet- RJ45 to modem?- ethernet or USB to PC?

Running any software firewalls? Even XP's wall.

Whats the ADSL's connection speed?

some phone lines cannot handle higher speeds so it might be that your line is not good enough and the connection drops.
How many phones in the house?

Could also be an issue with the modem (does the green connection light go out?) or the microfilter into the socket?

Could also be a faulty line or problems at the exchange?

Try and post as much info about this and your setup as you can and we will give you some troubleshooting scenerio's to help you nail this sucker to the wall...... 8)

I'll try and answer your questions as best I can........
I think I have what's called a modem router and it connects to my PC via a wire.(ethernet)......and this is probably not important but my wife's computer runs wirelessly.

I have not installed any software firewalls and I don't know if I'm using XP's firewall and don't know how to find out .

My ADSL speed is 512/64

There is only one phone in the house and it connects via a little box that the ADSL modem runs from when it plugs into the phone connection on the wall. ( I was thinking that this little box might be causing the problem?)

I have 4 lights that that are on while my connection is on......Power- stays on continuously.........System-continuously flashing on and off..........ADSL-blinks now and again............and the last light is always on which indicates which plug hole in the back on my modem that I am using.
......I don't know which one of those is the connection light.
........and I don't know what you mean by ....the microfilter into the socket.

I had to have my telephone line installed by the telephone company properly underground 2 weeks ago.....and when they buried my telephone line they also connected up the earth wire.......before that I was running my ADSL without an earth wire. ........I thought that may have fixed it but it didn't.

The telephone company checked my line for any faults but found none so I suspect that all is well at the exchange.

I didn't install the ADSL set up. I got the guy from my computer shop to do it. I told him that my connection drops off from time to time but he had no answers except to tell my ISP to have my connection checked but my ISP wanted $100 to do it and my ISP said they doubt that their connection is faulty.

Most ISP's always doubt that their line connections are faulty.....I have never heard one even suggest a problem may be at their end.
Unfortunately, we are at their mercy and unless we fork out the $100, we gotta take their word for it.

Your DSL speed is not fast enough to be the cause of the issue, especially seeing that you have just had a new line put in.

The microfilter i speak of is that little box that the ADSL modem and phone run from.....try replacing that if you suspect it to be the cause.
Your ISP should replace it free of charge.

My money is on the router!

Does your wifes computer also drop connection to the WAN on the wireless side?

If its an older model router, these can sometimes be a problem with the modem inbuilt.

Updating the routers firmware can sometimes resolve the issue and if not, try using and configuring another 'known working' router with an inbuilt modem if possible to see if this eliminates the problem.

Routers are fairly cheap these days..... and to be sure your getting value for money, go for a new wireless Belkin or D-Link and stick a wireless network adaptor in the PCI slot of your computer so you can set up your own home WLAN.
Sitting out on the back patio with your laptop with a cold beer, printing docs to the networked printer in your study inside, from the network mapped HDD on your wife's desktop in the spare room, is pretty cool Cheesy Grin (sparkly (Wireless is the way to go these days)

Well my wife's computer looses connection too........

It's a brand new router . It's a TP Link TD-W8920G

I rang TP Link and they don't want to help me unless I pay $100 and have my ISP's connection checked first ........ Let me think

Yeah......funny how their quick to take your money but slow to hand out help?

My next step would be to swap out the router and see if the problem still occurrs??

If it doesnt, you have nailed the issue!

Before swapping it out, you could try a 'hard resett' back to factory settings and then reconfigure your network settings again....up to you Albert!

Good Luck

I don't know how to reset the modem. It was installed by my computer repair man. But I may try and get my ISP to come to my home to reset the modem. I will ask them so.

There should be a small 'pinhead' type hole at the back of the router which you will need to hold in for about 5 seconds or so (I usually use a pen tip).

This will restore default factory settings for the router!

my modem has been a bit better.....I think I got about 5 days this time before it dropped off this morning.
I've asked my ISP to come over and give my modem a reset.
