Thank you for taking the time to review my post. I am writing this from my laptop, however am concerned with the two (2) different items on my daughters laptop.
She has an IBM Thinkpad, Win XP
#1 Thinkpoint and #2 Security Tool

I have tried booting from NORTON and KASPERSKY discs to pre-scan (scans do not reveal anything wrong)--Both discs dated 8-2009. I have tried various online scans (scans get to a point and computer reboots itself). Any file I look into is "infected/corrupt" and unable to open (per the thinkpoint and security tool).

I have browsed the forums prior to posting this, and am at a problem which I have not yet read about.
I can get into Safe Mode, however the screen is BLACK. Same problem occurs when booting into normal mode so I am unable to download or view anything.

Is there anything that can be done from BIOS?, or am I resigned to take this to my local computer repair shop?
I do not have the recovery disc for her laptop.
Once again, thank you for your consideration.
