Will you post more details about the malware on your machine? It is rather difficult to spot right now...

When I google a topic (using google) on internet explorer, it flashes "redirecting" and the page that comes up says, "Gala" instead of Google, in the same type and colorful way that Google does. Sometimes another fake directory title comes up - I cannot recall the other names - but they have their own look and are not Google look-alikes.

One of the scans that you had me do showed a problem. Should I have told it to fix it?

Thanks for your help!

Which scan was that?

OK - I ran everything again, as directed the first time. OTL picked up some bad stuff and deleted them. ESET scanner picked up 7 no-nos and quarantined them. The only thing I have not repeated is the RookitUnhooker. The Gala Directory is still here.... Please advise!

And thanks!

How did OTL pick up bad stuff and remove it?

I read that stuff to mean that it found bad stuff and deleted whatever it found. I saw another post about the directory redirect problem, so maybe I'll try re-running the Malwarebytes. I already did it, but will try it again.

Please download SINO by Artellos.

  • Save SINO to a place you can remember and run SINO.exe. (If you downloaded the ZIP version you will need to extract it first)
  • Then please check the following checkboxes:

    Code:

    Tasklist
    Startup Items
    Event Log
    Hosts file

  • Once checked, hit the Run Scan! button and wait for the program to finish the scan.

  • A notepad window will pop up. Please copy all of the content into your next reply.

Note: If you try to interact with the program once it’s started scanning it might appear to hang. The scan however will continue.

Yes - I just now tried. I enetered something in the google search place on the upper right side of the Internet Explorer tool bar and it redirected to Gala...

On your last post you identified that the virus attached to my HOSTS file and directed me to download SINO then report the log here, which I did last night. Do you see that?

descriptionposting my logs from OTL scan regarding Gala Directory virus - Page 2 EmptyRe: posting my logs from OTL scan regarding Gala Directory virus

more_horiz
I saw that.

I'm correct to say you get redirected to a site of search-gala.com? It is a fake Google site which appears as the Google search engine in your browser.

Looks like the search.xml file is infected.

Answer a couple of questions here real quick...

what happens if you go to Google.com?

Yahoo.com?

Can you search on those sites and still stick on those sites?

descriptionposting my logs from OTL scan regarding Gala Directory virus - Page 2 EmptyRe: posting my logs from OTL scan regarding Gala Directory virus

more_horiz
Correct. Here is an example: http://findgala.com/?&uid=302&q=james+avery

If I go to www.google.com (which is what I have to do) I do get a clean Google page with search results. However, sometimes when I click on the provided link, it redirects to usually not Gala, but some other "off" fake search page. I cannot think of any of their names right now. I just went to Yahoo and used their search thing and it seemed to go fine. Does that give you extra insight?
