My laptop was infected with ThinkPoint tonight. I followed the instructions to start (Windows Vista OS) in safe mode with networking. When the screen opens, safe mode is in all four corners, but there is a large ThinkPoint logo that takes up most of the screen and there is no way around it and no access to any programs. (Obviously, I am not using that computer.) I have System Mechanic set up to compress my registry at startup, but I am aborting it before I go to F8. What can I do to get past that logo and into my programs?

Hello, and welcome to GeekPolice.

Please tell me more about this. Have you seen any weird files? What other signs of infection are there? Does the computer act slow?

Hi and thank you for the assist! The computer is a gateway laptop and basics are: 32 bit, Vista, Outlook. Infected when an e-mail was received by a friend and forwarded to us with an NBC news link. Infected when the link was opened.

Here are symptoms: Normal boot up end with a pop up scan program that mimics a problem (Thinkpoint virus) to get yo to buy the program. You cannot get to desktop access any program or Internet. It also prevents you from closing down. I can do control/delete and access the task master. The only way to shut down is by holding the power button down.

I went into Google for Thinkpoint and got instructions to boot in "safe mode with networking" and download malwarebytes etc.

I rebooted holding down the #8 key and then at the prompt menu selected for "safe mode with networking". Boot then continues to show system files until it comes up with what looks like a blank screen with the word "safe" at all four corners. However, I can't see if there is anything on the screen because at that point the phony Thinkpoint screen pops up and the only option that works is on the virus pop-up you can begin their scan or not, but you can't get rid of the pop up or go any further. I can't access the internet viia "safe mode with networking. If you try to control/delete close down another pop up comes up saying that Thinkpoint is preventing a close-down. The only option is to power off by holding down the power button.

I do not get the impression that the computer is running particularly slow except maybe in the booting process.

We do have 2 other computers we are woking with all with internet access

Thanks much for your help - that computer is obviously very important to our work and have many important ongoing research and other files.

Thanks again
Peter and Myrna

Take a look at this removal guide, and tell me if you can follow it, to get the issue disinfected. It provides instructions by me on how to remove it, along with other great info: http://www.helpmyos.com/removal-guides-f41/how-to-remove-thinkpoint-t2301.htm

Just do steps 1-3, and NOT step 4 (because I am already helping you here). Let me know how it goes.

I had a feeling that it was hotfix.exe (among others). My neighbor followed your advice and worked on the computer for me (as I was terrified I'd make it worse), and it looks as if it worked. I say looks as if because I am getting some legit-looking Microsoft warning screens about contaminated files. If that continues, I'll be back to you.

You are terrific!
