Is there a way to be sure an IP you are checking on is really true? I've been trying to find some answers about who may have hacked my Facebook account. People have said it's usually someone you know. So that's why I'm wondering if searching an IP is the true location of where someone is?

Not usually. The location of an IP can find a location, but because IPs are located in the ISP. Sometimes the ISP can be 25-50 miles away. They do not always indicate the location of the computer.

Also, if the hacker is any smart, they will route their internet connection through a proxy. That way, the logged IP is the one of the proxy, not the actual user. So, unless you can trace the connection (which in my experience is more complicated than it sounds) the hacker could be from anywhere.

Explain more EchoLynx.

How will hacking someone through a proxy work?

I think he meant hackers use botnets/proxies from other machines and other ISP's to mask their own so they can't be traced easily.

Sorry, I used much more technical jargon than I intended.

There are many different ways of hiding someone's true IP address, and any hacker worth his salt is likely to use one, so any location given could possibly be wholly incorrect.
