USB Issues

I am running WIN XP on a Dell Precision M4400 laptop. When I plug in a thumb drive to the USB port I have issues trying to open up files from my C drive. When I go to task manager to stop the programs I get a white background on the desktop and something about my Active Destop. I have Vipre antivirus software on my laptop. I have also tried using Spybot, Malware Bytes, Hijack This and none of these find any issues.

Has anyone experienced this issue?

I did get that same white background on an old laptop as well. I was told by someone it was the motherboard. We replaced that and it didn't totally take care of the problem. That laptop is now just sitting idle. I will be anxious to see what you find out here also.
