My AVG subscription is up and I am looking at new AV packages. I have had updating issues with AVG and corruption issues so I am looking for a new program. I have been reading many of the threads here but have confusion on one thing… What am I getting with a paid product versus a free product. Seems like there are a lot of good free products out there so I am trying to figure out what I get MORE for a paid version. I have no problem paying mind you I just want to understand. Thanks! My answer would usually be the same to everyone asking which antivirus to use: As long as you practice safe surfing, a free, reputable antivirus would do.

If you're looking at the free and paid version (AVG free & AVG Pro for example) of the same product brand, you will usually get more features in the paid version. Such as scheduled scanning and maybe more customization. Protection might not necessarily be better.

Looking at the features, paid AVs also seem to provide more protection over the source of infections, such as scripts, emails etc.

For a free AV, I would recommend Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials.
For a paid AV, I would recommend Kaspersky or ESET.

Try them out, look at their features, and see which you prefer.
