Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding this.

I have a Windows server 2008 system running which I use as a file server, web server, ftp server and a couple of other things. I'm an IT student using the software from a license for learning purposes.

I have installed Windows defender and clamwin, and set them to run scheduled scans early in the morning once a week (clamwin monday at 3am and Windows Defender tuesday 3am). From my research, its best practice to leave the server logged off when not using it. I have set a couple of other programs to run as services which works fine, however, clamwin won't run as a service.

My Question is:
Does windows defender run scheduled scans if no one is logged in, and if not, how can I do this? The same goes with windows update, will updates install if no one is logged in?

Thanks! :smile2:

I don't think so. I doubt the scans will run, unless there was a specific setting for it in the Settings area of Windows Defender.

Do you know if I could use task scheduler to make it start while logged off?

What about Windows update? Will that also not run if i'm not logged in?

Windows Update might run while not logged in.

However, I doubt Task Scheduler can be used to run the scans while not logged in.

However, if you are worried about security, password protect your account, and when you are ready to finish on the computer, just use the Switch User button, and you will still be logged in, so Windows Defender can do the scan, but will keep your interface locked.

Hi,

Thanks for your help. The issue is, while I can leave the computer logged in, and just lock it like you said, however after a windows update that requires a restart, then the computer wont be logged in after a restart. Then my scans wont run.

I have windows update scheduled to install early hours of the morning once a week when the server isn't being used.

For your new question, I split it to here: http://www.GeekPolice.net/operating-systems-f20/windows-server-question-t23855.htm

so it gets proper attention.
