Start menu inactive when USB stick inserted.

Hi,
Got a real strange one here.

Both my kids netbooks have the same fault, they use the same kids games sites.

The netbooks operate normally until a usb stick is inserted, then the start menu becomes inoperable, infact anything on the task bar won't work, the mouse pad still works and I can still select anything on the desktop.

I've done a Malwarebytes scan which returned no faults, a system restore to a previous date (still no joy) plus a quick internet search which has revealed nothing.

Currently virus scanning one of then and a system restore to an even earlier date on the other.

I'm desperate for a quick fix as I'm off on my annual hols in the morning (UK time), so obviously I've got a lack of time and probably going to struggle for a decent internet connection in Cyprus (I'll be relying on free wifi).

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be extremely greatfull.

King Regards,
chris

Hi, Smile...

Please download OTL to your Desktop. (If you already have it downloaded, then just follow the instructions below).
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\*.exe /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) and paste (Edit->Paste) the contents of these files, one at a time

Note: in the event that OTL fails to run, please use alternate download links to try again:

Hi, Smile...

Please download ComboFix Start menu inactive when USB stick inserted. Combofix from BleepingComputer.com

Alternate link: GeeksToGo.com

Alternate link: Forospyware.com

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Start menu inactive when USB stick inserted. Query_RC
Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Start menu inactive when USB stick inserted. RC_successful

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hey sneakyone, thanks for your help so far but I'm going to have to wait till I get back off my annual vacation before I can continue with the above scan.

I'm really struggling for a decent wifi connection and that scan's gonna take a while to complete.

I really appreciate your help so far and look forward to resuming in a week or so, thanks so far.

    Kind regards,
    Chris

I've just tried them both in safe mode and all the USB ports work normally in safe mode. Start back up normally and the fault is back.

When USB is working normally the LED on the USB will flash, pause, then flash when first inserted. When not working properly it only flashes the fist part then stops when first inserted.

Obviously I've tried a selection of USB sticks.

Just more info if it helps.

    Hi.

I think the malicious file lies on the USB Drive, please keep it connected during these scans otherwise it will blindside me.

Did you run ComboFix withe the USB drive inserted?
