So my computer is working but it is just so slow. You all have helped me a lot in the past and I appreciate it. Here is my latest highjackthis log. Any ideas what I can fix and or delete to improve the performance. Thank you so much. In the tutorials forum I added something on May 20 about switching to multiple servers that I think I screwed up. If you have any thoughts on that as well I would love to hear them.

Disable TeaTimer
The Resident TeaTimer tool of Spybot-&, may interfere with the fix, so we need to temporarily disable it.

1. Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
   
2. Choose Exit Spybot & Resident
   
3. Open Spybot &
   
4. Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
   
5. Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
   
6. If your firewall raises a question, say "OK"
   
7. Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
   
8. Go to File >> Exit to terminate Spybot.
   
9. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
   

Spybot's Tea-Timer is now disabled.

• Open HijackThis
  
• Choose "Do a system scan only"

During the normal operation of your computer, Windows and your other program create an awful lot of temporary files. Though it's called temporary, they don't usually get removed, so they build up.

CCleaner is a great and free utility I use to delete temporary files automatically. It's able to free up disk space and speed up your computer. Read this topic on how to install and run CCleaner.

Having a lot of programs installed on your computer can slow it down. Do you really use them all? If you don't, uninstall the ones which you do not need.

If you are using Windows XP:

• Click Start >> Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs
  
• Select the program you want to remove to highlight it.
  
• Click the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions given on screen.
  
• Repeat these steps for all programmes you wish to remove.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7:

• Click Start >> Type in uninstall a program
  
• Select the program you want to remove to highlight it.
  
• Click the Uninstall/Change button and follow the instructions given on screen.
  
• Repeat these steps for all programmes you wish to remove.

Every time you write a file to your hard drive, the drive controller has to find space on it. During this process, it break the files into fragments so that it can use the available disk space efficiently. However over time files can become very fragmented because of this, and your drive controller has to work harder to find all the fragments and combine them so that a program can use it. This slows things down, depending on the amount of fragmentation of your files, it can slow things down a lot.

So it's a good idea to defragment your hard drive. This will rearrange the fragments on your drive so they form contiguous entities which are much easier for your drive controller to deal with. Note that this is a time consuming operation, usually taking several hours if you're doing it for the first time. You can stop defragmenting any time and start again. It will continue defragmenting from where it stopped.


If you are using Windows XP:

• Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Defragmenter >> click the Defragment button.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7:

• Click Start >> Type in Disk Defragmenter >> click the Defragment Now button >> Select drives to defragment >> Click OK to start.

So I right clicked on the spybot in System tray and it went away and nothing offered me Open spybot &. Now there is no Spybot in the System tray. I use Ccleaner almost every time I use my computer. I also defrag a fair amount. Most recently with the defraggler program. Do you think it is OK for me to fix checked on the highjackthis now? I love your advice about deleting programs I don't use. The problem is I'm not totally sure what I use and what I don't use. I'm apprehensive about what to delete and what not to delete. Please help. Thank you for your patience and assistance.

Yes, go ahead with the fix. As for uninstalling, go to control panel, and see which programs you have not used in a long time, if you're not sure whether to remove it or not, post the name here.

I did the fix. I'm not sure what programs I can get rid of. I don't how to send you my add/remove programs list with the last used dates. I did create a text file from ccleaner without the last used by dates but I don't know how to attach that either. Some of the dates aren't right. Please tell me how to get the list to you so you can look it over. Thank you.

Thank you. So when I try to uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.8 it tells me that it is on a resource that is unavailable. I removed ArcSoft Software Suite and ESET Online Scanner v3. My wife uses Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. I use CCleaner often and I occasionally use Defraggler and FileHippo.com Update Checker. I only use HiJackThis when I am working with you. Would removing it or any of the others really make a difference?
