New tool: AVG rescue CD

AVG has pooped out a rescue CD based on a Linux system.
AVG states:

• Comprehensive administration toolkit
  
• System recovery from virus and spyware infections
  
• Suitable for recovering MS Windows and Linux operating systems (FAT32 and NTFS file systems)
  
• Ability to perform a clean boot from CD or USB stick
  
• Free support and service for paid license holders of any AVG product
  
• FAQ and Free Forum self-help support for AVG Free users

Time will tell if it competes with other utilities that are already existing. In either case it is an excellent effort and many AVG fans (which I´m not one of, heh) will be happy.

Actually, they have always had that rescue CD. Problem is, they once charged for it. Until recently, when they decided it should be free.

They got low traffic for their rescue CD, so they figure it would be better to give it away for free.

Of course, AVG is the number one free antivirus, but one of the potential worst in detections. (In my opinion).

I have Kaspersky Internet Security and it could run circles around AVG Internet Security.

Not in your opinion only, independent testing shows that AVG is always behind Avast and Avira. I´d pick Panda Cloud over it as well.

Yeah. Rescue discs are a good idea. But, Kaspersky's rescue disc is best. Probably because they know how to remove rootkits. The only other AV that can remove rootkits correctly is Avira, (and maybe ESET).

Raymond also found it and puts some more info. I like the ability to maintain an updated version on USB. I mean, every time you need a rescue CD; you have one that is outdated. Does Avira startup also has that possibility?

Kaspersky's rescue system is free. I think it was taken offline for a little bit.

I researched a bit that topic of rescue USB´s
I don´t quite like rescue CD´s because the day you need them, they are outdated and of course the PC that requires attention has no internet connection or whatnot. Also, who carries a CD with him?

For rescue USBs, you can use AVG as indicated in the OP., just follow the link.

It appears that the Kaspersky rescue CD cannot be moved to USB stick AND use its autoupdate function. If you like an updated Kaspersky rescue system, gotta stick with the rescue CD.

A very good option is the Avira rescue system. This can be put on an USB stick.
You will need to follow the instructions here to create one, with the additional step of deleting the autorun.inf that is on the stick and renaming autorun_usb.inf to autorun.inf.

I created one: it works fine and it takes only 80-90MB of space.

Oh...uhh...Kaspersky is creating an all new rescue system. Which is why their rescue CD is not always available right now.
