Hello there,

I recently received a computer from a friend`s parents and they were having trouble connecting to the internet with windows explorer 32 bit, as well as firefox. Windows 64 bit on the other hand worked.

They also mentioned that they have been sending spam messages with msn.

They also cannot connect to many automatic downloads from programs... which is a pain. For instance, their anti-virus cannot connect to their auto updater, spybot s&d, malwarebytes... etc.

I tried the easy first, seeing how they have an msn virus, I went ahead and googled myself some msn virus removal tool from

http://www.msnvirusremoval.com/download.php

The tool successfully detected the malware as explorer.exe and regedit.exe in the system32 folder,

The following is the output:
Found c:\windows\system32\explorer.exe ...unable to delete!
Found c:\windows\system32\regedit.exe ...unable to delete!

I then looked at the processes, found nothing of importance

I went ahead and downloaded spybot S&D with the include manual update, scanned... found a few trojans. Removed those successfully, rebooted, re-scanned and found nothing.

Explorer.exe, regedit.exe are still infected. As well as the internet connection.

I then ran Malwarebytes and AdAware SE without results as well. Is the msn virus remover accurate? Is there something I am missing?

here is the hijackthis log:

Explorer.exe and regedit.exe seem to be infected Mbamicontw5 Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes.org.
Alternate link: BleepingComputer.com.
(Note: if you already have the program installed, just follow the directions. No need to re-download or re-install!)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

(Note: if you already have the program installed, open Malwarebytes from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut, click the Update tab, and click Check for Updates, before doing the scan as instructed below!)

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thank you for the reply,

Unfortunately Malwarebytes was not able to pick up the virus/trojan, I decided to go ahead and re-installed the the system files for windows which fixed the problem instead of cleaning it, I think its a safer measure then cleaning the trojan...

The problem is now gone, thanks for the help.
