Internet connected but cant browse.

I am running a Sony Viao VGN-FZ460E with Vista and last june/July I had an update come in that cause my internet browsing to stop I can get into yahoo messenger or download files via update even ping websites but cant view them through Iexplorer or Netscape. I am exhausted on troubleshooting system restore will bring me back to pre update state but I need updates for security purposes. Does anyone have any ideas?

Open CMD, Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults by typing: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults by typing: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Restart your PC.

If it doesn't work, download Winsock XP Fix from here, save it to your Desktop.

Double click on the exe on your Desktop.
Press the "Fix" button, then restart again.

See if you can connect now.

I try that and get the requested operation requires elevation... ? Does that mean I dont have the right admin privledges? I am on as an admin.

Start >> CMD >> Right click >> run as administrator.

Never mind I found a fix for that, by putting a copy of cmd.exe on the desktop and making it run as administrator. Now running that program it will work on Vista right? nI tried it it came up with a couple errors but I still cannot browse the web...

I'm having the same problem on Vista Home Basic. Skype works, but that's about all. Tried the fixes mentioned here and still no joy.

It's bizarre as my iPod can still get wifi as can my other computer. Could the computer be blocked by MAC settings? How can I unblock it?

I had the same problem with windows vista. I tried everything like mentioned above. Nothing seems to help. Then I removed Norman internet security and the problem was resolved. I hope this might help...
