PC: (eMachine/Gateway T3120; AMD Sempron 1.8GHz CPU; 2GB RAM; 100GB HD, 50% full; 550W PSU; windows XP Home, SP3)
monitors: 2 identical Samsung 19" 1280 X 1024 LCD, standard format
video card: nVidia GeForce 7600GS 512mb
I have been using this set-up for the past 3 years; one monitor is hooked up to the video card with a 25 pin VGA (or RGB) connector; the second with a DVI connector. No overclocking; no games.
A few months ago, on start up, one monitor went black after about 10" to 15". Since then I have been swapping cables and monitors, but the results are always the same: the monitor connected to the 25pin VGA outlet of the video card stops working after the selftesting of the PC (after about 10"). The monitor connected to the DVI outlet has no problems. On start up, there are no beep (error) codes (speakers and headphones are OK).
Other than the above the PC runs OK on 1 monitor.
Since then I have run the latest nVidia driver, removed a virus and cleaned my PC with CC. The problem still persists. Also checked "System Information", but could not find anything out of the ordinary (to the extent that I know what I was looking at). This PC has never had any heating problems; all fans still work, including the fan of the videocard. With the 2 monitors working the CPU usage varied between 2 and 60% (as per Windows Task Manager/Performance).
Is there anything else I can do to make the second monitor work again or at least pinpoint the problem? Any way to determine if this is caused by hardware, software or malware?
Thanks in advance,
GMK
