I am in deep trouble and need some assitance. From experience I can always get a answer on here.

I just started my laptop up. It booted up to Windows XP. I could see my desktop and all the icons fine. Well I know my battery was getting bad but the connestion to the power supply did not seem right. So I unpluged it and the computer turned off. Now when I try to start it back up, it tries, I see windows XP and then it goes to a message window. It prompts me to open windows in safe mode, normal start up. Start up when the software was working correctly and so on. nȯne of these work. I can get into just about everything but I am just not knowlegeable enough to go further. I don't want to lose all my files by doing something wrong. I have some very important files and pictures on it. I backed everything up two weeks ago, but have newer stuff not backed up.

What can I do to get this back to normal?

I do get a prompt that states I had a power failure and start in safe mode, but I try and that does not work for me.

I don't have a recovery disc in hand. This is a sister in laws laptop that I am borrowing. I don't want to delete everything and start over. it seems most of the local shops always want top do it the easy way.......you lost everything so your out of luck. Let's just reload everything.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Bob

Hello,

Please try to remove the power cord and battery for about 15 minutes and plug everything back in and try again.

Tried it, it did not work. I did as you suggested. I left it unplugged and battery out over night. Still the same problem.

What it does is boot up to...... we apologize, windows did not start successfully, A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
Or if your computer had a power failure or a reset button has been hit.
It says to start windows normally, If power failure ocurred.

So I have tried all the options at this point.
Even the last known settings before the failure.

It gets to the window XP screen......then goes to a blue error screen (shortly maybe 1-2 seconds) So short I really can't read the message.

It just sits there recycling.

Hello,

What is the brand of your PC? We might be able to use your recovery partition.

I tried one of the tips to fix it off the Gateway site.

I hit F11 when it was booting up. I was hoping it had the internal recovery. it started up and ran through the process and at the end it required me to insert the recovery disc. At present time I do not have it. Not sure if the one for this laptop is available?

Can I use one with the same operating software from a HP laptop that I own?

I feel like I am so close..........

Hello,

I'm not sure if using your HP disc will work, OEM versions of Windows only work for a specific computer. Maybe Gateway would provide you with a recovery disc, you could try contacting them for that. Another way is to get a new Windows disc and install it.

I sent a request to gateway, we shall see what happens. I guess it would be nice if the in law finds the recovery disc for the computer! Problem is they don't move very fast for anything.
