Avg 7.5.549 Rawr

Ok I have windows xp home edition, I was previously running avg free 7.5.549 and wanted to upgrade to avg free 9 when I go to install 9 it told me 7.5 was stopping it, went to add/remove still got the error, downloaded the avg uninstaller, still error, went through avg files one by one using search, deleted them, still error, I installed revo, and maybe I don't know how to work it but it is wanting to remove system files that have nothing to do with avg, thought to reinstall avg 7.5 but it is no longer offered on cnet and I am afraid to download from another site due to the fact I have no anti-virus, at this point I am fed up with avg and thinking about going with something else, so if no one has a solution for this problem can anyone suggest a good, free, anti virus?

Scroll down to AVG and follow the instructions.

When I run that it pops up and black screen, runs through some programs and closes automatically, I restarted the computer and still nothing, It is still reading in my computer.
