I went through your steps for removal. Was able to get to RegEdit once but only found one item on the list (AvScan) and removed it. Also, did not find items listed under Processes or DLLs to remove. System will not open in Safe Mode. After selecting "Open in Safe Mode" the next screen says - We apologize - could not open in safe mode..... A recent hardware or softward change might have confused the program.....

I downloaded Malwarebytes-Antimalware to another computer (shared) - copied the program to the infected computer - but it would not run. Everything I try to open gives me a message that it cannot be opened. File (name) is infected.
From time to time it automatically opens the internet with a Viagra ad. Now what?

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

I will try but the problem is that I cannot access the internet to download. I get a message that "this link could harm your computer" and options to download their software. I am sending this through a different computer than the one that is infected.
I was able to get to the RegEdit screen once, immediately after rebooting and before the virus kicked in. And my AVG program willl open with a virus alert right after re-booting. But once I send the virus it found to the vault, I get the popups again and can't go any further.
Thanks for your reply. If you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears. But maybe its time to take the computer to someone who can work on it.

Can you download Hijack This from your other machine and transfer it from USB?

I don't have a USB stick. I have an old USB thumbdrive that my computer won't recognize. I downloaded the other Malwarebytes program to this computer (good one) and then copied it to the C drive on the infected computer in "My Computer" but it would not load. Like every other program I try to open, I get the message that the program is infected. So I don't think that it would open from a USB stick either. What do you think?

Rename the installer or whatever to winlogon or explorer, see if it runs then.
