My new notebook recently packed up. Stupidly I tried to fix it myself which seems to have invalidated my guarantee, I didn't do much (!!) only deleted the odd 'partition' etc. I got hold of an 'ISO' image and lots and lots of programmes designed to put windows xp onto a USB and then onto my notebook. Nothing works. Always get back to a black screen that says 'windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem etc etc. I ran CHDSK (?) which I got from the manufacturer on a CD and everything on the hard drive seems ok. HAS ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS ???

You probably deleted an important partition. If you have knowledge about Windows File System, you would know that about the boot process:

1.The booting is started with the cpu taking instructions from the BIOS

2. The cpu searches for the hardware devices that it has been configured to support.

3.After the hardware has been located, the BIOS examines the floppy disks, hard disks, and CDs in some configured order and looks at the first sector for boot code.

4. The code in the first sector of a bootable disk causes the CPU to process the partition table and locate the bootable partition where the Windows operating system is located.

5. In the first sector of the partition is more boot code, which locates and loads the actual operating system.

6. If there is any missing boot code from the patitions, the BIOS returns a error.

This explains your problem below:

Do not attempt a chkdsk. This may corrupt your file data structures even further.[/quote]

What you have done is ineeded wrong, you should have sent it straight to the service centre. Modifying it by yourself only voids your warranty.

Diagnosis: Deleted an important partition, causing inability to boot.

Solution: Do not attempt any further installations or self repairs, send your machine to a service centre immediately.
