I'm trying to work on my step-daughter's computer. It's a DELL XPS410. The problem it's having is when you boot it up and Windows is trying to start and it gets to Welcome screen and shows her name to login and all. When I click on the name, it shows "Loading personal settings" and shows her desktop picture with no icons, no start menu, etc. then it quickly goes back to the Welcome screen and sometimes shows "logging off" very quickly and sometimes don't, and then I'll see "saving your settings". It won't log into windows at all.

Then, I tried to get into safe mode and it won't. It goes to a BSOD Stop error screen and said

STOP: 0x0000007E (0x00000005, 0x80537009, 0xF792E508, 0xF792E204)

It has Windows XP Media Center Edition and she doesn't have the disk either.

Oh, and one of the BSOD stop error screen said:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0x00000005, 0x80537009, 0xF78AE508, 0xF78AE204)

So, is there anything I can do to get this to boot up?

Oh, and she had mentioned about it having a lot of pop-ups and the AV finding a worm or something. That's what I was actually gonna work on, but since I can't even get into Windows, I can't even begin to work on that until this problem is fixed.

Thanks in advance.

Try doing a system restore, but I don't know if it's gonna help you. Dowload Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and do a scan...

Hello,

There should be a recovery partition on the computer.

Follow the instructions here to access the recovery partition for the recovery: http://www.geekpolice.net/tutorials-guides-f13/dell-system-recovery-partition-hotkey-instructions-dell-pc-restore-t7661.htm

Ok, it took me a while to get it to go the the restore option. Maybe it was a timing thing of how I was mashing Ctrl-F11 but when I finally got to that, it said that it was NOT successful and now when I try to start up the computer it is a black screen with white writing...like a MS-DOS looking screen that says:

"Loading PBR for descriptor 2...done."

and goes no further.

I can't download Malware Bytes on it because it won't even log into Windows.

Hello,

We can't do anything much without the Windows disc with your computer stuck in a reboot cycle.

If you have your CD, you can:

1. Start up the computer and click F12 to give you the boot-up options.
2. Insert Windows Installation/Recovery CD into CDROM, choose CDROM boot option and click enter.
3. Let the installation process continue until it prompts you "Press R to repair". . .this should then take you into the DOS mode.
4. Type in FIXBOOT and when prompted, press "Y" to start creating the new boot partition. If everything goes right, you should get a message saying the partition was corrupted and a new one was created successfully.
5. Remove the CD and reboot your system, everything should be ok now.

I'll get her to look and see if she has the CD. She does have the Dell Dimension Resource CD. At the top it says "Drivers and Utilities". It says the contents are "Device drivers and Diagnostics and utilities". That's not the right one, though is it?
