Advanced Virus Remover, cannot install hijackthis

I am visiting my inlaws for Xmas and I can't get their computer to work. When starting it normally, a spyware alert window pops up that says Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on the computer, then it goes into a description about the worm. I feel that it's a trick.

Then it brings up advanced virus remover, etc.

In safe mode the first popup appears but not the advanced virus remover.

I've looked online and have tried to install/run malwarebyte, superantispyware, and HiJackThis.
Malwarebyte only stays open for about 3 seconds, HiJackThis won't install.

I'm fairly computer literate but I can't seem to solve this problem. Please help

Please download exeHelper from one of the two links.

• Double-click on exeHelper.com or exeHelper.scr to run the fix.
  
• A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  
• Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
  

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

I found a tutorial for removing it online, and it had me erase 1 registry entry and the AVR.exe file. Now, I cannot login to the computer, in normal or safe mode. I click on any of the 2 usernames (Administrator or Compaq_Owner) at the XP logon page and it says loading personal settings, then it logs off and you're back at the logon page.

I think it might have to be reformatted unless you guys have any ideas.

Formatting would probably be easier and less time consuming, but if your willing to work through it, then so am I.

Do you have your XP disc anyway?

I figured as such and have started reformatting the computer.
