Hi there,
I'm having a major problem booting up my PC. I'll try to explain as best I can what is happening. Please bear with me (I'm no 'techie')
Yesterday my PC seemed to be stalling a little so I decided to reboot it. When I did, the PC would get to the 'Windows Start Up' page then it would flash up the dreaded bright blue screen for a nano-second before trying to rebooting itself again....and again....and again etc.
I tried switching off the PC for a while (a few times) yet still it kept on doing te same thing.
In the end, I seemingly had no alternative than to reformat my hard drive (again).
My PC is very old (AMD Athlon (tm) XP2000+) and has broken down many times, sadly, I cant afford a new one at the moment. My HD is very old too and due to similar problems in the past, I have reformatted it at least 6 times.
After reformatting the HD, when I now boot up, I get the usual black screen initially, then when the white strip appears at the bottom of the screen, it then takes about 20 minutes to fully boot up. This is excruciatingly slow and is driving me mad because I dont know why it's doing this or how to fix it. Yikes
It did this once before (slow booting). Not the last time I reformatted the HD (that was fine), but the time before that. There must be a reason for this and I would love to know why it does this.
My XP disc is an original copy, not a 'copy' and it is an Original XP disc, so as you can imagine, given the time it takes to reboot my PC now every time, and having to install all the updates to SP2 etc etc it's taking forever.
The last time I reformatted my HD I'm sure that when I installed XP again from the disc, it allowed me to save existing files, only this time, it didnt. I tried to just 'Repair' the installation before reformatting but it seems to get to "Press 'R'", then doesnt really do anything else.
I have enclosed a HijackThis log for your perusal that I did this evening.
Many thanks in advance for reading this message and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks: Grog.

Hello,

What kind of fomart did you perform? A repair install or a full format?

I tried to perform a repair install but it didnt seem to do anything. As mentioned before, when I clicked the 'R' button to Repair it went to a black screen which showed a C: prompt and said something along the lines of "If you want to exit Repair, type 'Exit'.
I left it as it was for about 20 minutes and nothing happened so I exited and then went for the full format after trying to repair about 4 times.

Hello,

It sounds very much like a failing hard drive. If you did not install anything right after the format and this happens, it's the hard drive starting to fail.

I did wonder if it was the HD. It just seems odd that after the last reformat before this one, it was running smoothly and up to speed.
It is an old HD and hardly surprising it's failing I guess. Anyway, many thanks for the suggestion. Much appreciated:
Grog.

Hello,

One more thing, what format did you perform? Full format or quick format?

Sorry to butt in real quick inferno....

Grog for future reference pressing R wont repair install your OS. It will bring you to the recovery console. Where you would do thing like copy boot files from a cd to your pc.

Grog, when the computer starts, try tapping f8 until such time as u get a startup menu. At that point, try booting in2 safe mode, & let's see what happens. Does it still take 20 minutes?

Doctor Inferno: I did a full format on the HD.

Pokerking98: Thanks for the info, I didnt know that. I thought recovery console was a repair facility Crying I'm now wondering how or what is way to repair installations.

Abletec: I will try the F8 as you requested when I next start the PC up. I did try it initially and I think it came up with a long list of file names and numbers but then didnt do anything else. I will try again though.
Many thanks for your comments - much appreciated.
