I am running windows vista home on a dell laptop. I am unable to run my McAffee on-demand scan. I get a message that I do not have permission to access this program. A friend tried to run several other programs, including Malwarebytes, Hijackthis, etc. After the initial installation and first attempt to scan, they can no longer be accessed either. My normal virus program is McAffee Enterprise 8.5.

I downloaded the file avenger.zip and tried to open it. I received a McAffee On access scan alert that the file was a Back-Door EFN trojan. Was this link tainted?

No, just Mcafee being picky.

We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before using the avenger I guess.

See HERE for how to disable your AV.

Try getting the avenger working now.
