XP not functioning in normal or safe mode

My tower has stopped working. it started as not being able to access websites, then windows defender giving an error, then the task manager being infected. it also poped up with a virus or something that had those annoying fake pop up alerts. i still was able to run AVG. that scan got me a few trojans but the problem was not resolved. i tried to run Malwarebytes on it but upon install it would not launch and renaming files did not help. i tried to launch safe mode and run malwarebytes from there but had no desktop, start menu, task manager, nothing. just a black screen with "safe mode" in the corners. i attempted a launch in last known good config and achieved basically the same results plus the rather appropriate image of someone dressed as darth vader playing the fiddle that was my desktop background. i have no idea what to do next.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

ok i tried running hijackthis however it gave me an error and shut down. i cant get it restarted through the task manager it says something about not having appropriate permissions.

i think whatever has caused this has hit my netbook as well probably while the two computers were still networked. should I start a new thread with this problem or can this be taken care of with the same or similar steps?
Update: cannot run hijackthis on netbook, but i can run system look. should i look for the same files?

I will only deal with one machine at a time if they are the same user, otherwise it will get really confusing.

We'll deal with this first, then the other machine.

Can you download Hijack This on the machine we are currently working on? the file causing the block problem is gone now, so you should be able to.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I could not remove/fix these two files as they did not show up in the second scan. similar files did show up but i did not fix them just in case. Tried to install mbam and it gave an error. ran third HiJackThis scan. Here are the results:

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  
  * Tools->Options->Main tab
  * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  
  2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:
  
  
  
  
  
  3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  5. Close any open browsers.
  6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  
  
• We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  
• See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  
• Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  
• Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  
• ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
  ***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

I ran combofix twice. the first time it initiated with errors and also poped up an avenger log from one of the past few days. it restarted into normal mode which did not function. upon restart into safe mode there was no .txt file. I therefore ran it again and got the log file below but no restart. i hope this contains the information you need.

since my computer is not displaying certian images, im not entirely sure i did this right according to the picture. but when i grabbed the .txt file and droped it onto the combo fix icon combo fix started right up. i ended up having to do this twice. the first time it again did not produce a log file. the second time it popped up with warnings that avg was running. i thought it was shut down as it did not appear in the list of processes in the Task Manager. however i cannot figure out how to shut it down. the only thing that hapens when i try to run avg is it enters into a command line scanner since i am in safe mode. i cant access the regular program to de-activate the active scanner. i shut down combo fix the second time.

ok i got confirmation from avg that the scanner does not run in safe mode i went ahead and did another scan. these are the results:

How is the machine running now?

its the same. no start menu no desktop no access to the task manager when booted normally or in safe mode as user. no start menu or desktop when started in safe mode as admin. it wouldnt let me uninstall the java programs. it gave me an error about windows installer service not working in safe mode or being improperly installed.

Hmm, sounds like Explorer isn't working too well.

Boot to normal mode, and when it comes on blank, can you open the Task Manager by using alt/ctrl/del.

Under the Applications tab, press "New Task...", and type in "explorer" in the run field.

Does your Desktop load now?

ctrl alt del doesnt work. it gives me an error saying the admin has blocked this function or something to that effect.

4. Allow it to be scanned, it could take a few minutes depending on server load.

1. Close any open browsers.
   
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
   
3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

How is the machine running now?

its actually running reƖative well considering its an old un-upgraded pos. a little slower than normal i think and i cannot re-install windows defender. i uninstalled it when i thought a bad update was the cause of the problem. oops. it says something about insufficent permissions. i still cannot access the task manager. it still says it has been disabled by the admin. audio and video seem to work just fine.

The above guide is for disabling Task Manager, but follow the steps and turn it back on.

this also managed not to work, but i somehow found a way around it. i deleted the old defender file and then it let me re-install. ran mbam and got rid of the stuff it found, re-booted and pow i can get to the task manager. all seems to be good with it finally!

thank you thank you thank you! i shall certainly try to stick to firefox from now on though i dont like the UI as much as IE. ive created the restore point so it should be good to go. i just have one question and another foray to ask of you. first is there a program or a setting in windows out there like carbonite or mozi that will instead of an on-line back up, automatically backup files to an external hard drive when it is connected? also as i mentioned earlier, could you also help with my net book that is getting assulted by police pro even in safe mode?

For backup software, I know a few, but they don't do it automatically like your wanting, so it's probably better to ask in software forum for that, other techs on this forum will know some different programs than I do.
