Indifferent or Blank I have this desot.exe problem just like a bunch of other people that have posted on the forums and it's the most annoying thing ever. I had Windows Antivirus Pro and Windows Police Pro problems before this, but I got rid of them. I know that desot.exe came in Police Pro, but I have tried about a billion different methods and absolutely nothing can get rid of this thing. I have looked at everything that comes up on Google and every solution, but absolutely nothing is working for me here. I already have Malwarebytes on my computer (but can't run, as well as mostly anything else). I cannot find the desot.exe folder or the System32 folder and I am unable to get them in Safe Mode either as whenever I go to the screen at start-up to go to Safe Mode, my arrow keys do not work, so I can't select it. Renaming things to .com instead of .exe hasn't worked either. I tried a command.com method in the Run... option but that did not work either with regedit. I've tried searching for the file in Search, but it freezes and shuts down every time it gets near the file into the Windows or System folders. Usually I can find ways after a lot of searching to get rid of most viruses, but I don't think one has ever had me as stumped as this. It's driving me crazy. I hope you guys can help me out. Please (puppy eyes)

Edit: Also, I have now tried the ComboFix thing and I tried renaming it to svchost.exe, iexplore.exe, explorer.exe, and winlogon.exe and none of them will open. -_-

Hello.
Please download this file.

Download it to your Desktop.
Double click it to run it; select yes to the registry merge prompt.

That should fix the file association..hopefully. Can you run things now?

I did it, double-clicked to run it, and everything went away for a second and then it came back to normal, but all that happened was the normal DOS desot.exe box came up and said "access denied".

Lets try this.

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

This is all that would come up:

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision 59, http://www.silentrunners.org/
Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Output limited to non-default values, except where indicated by "{++}"

Startup items buried in registry:
---------------------------------

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ {++}
"MSMSGS" = ""C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background" [** WMI GetObject error **]

Is there supposed to be more or is this okay?

Hello.
There is supposed to be more, try re-running SilentRunners for me, see what happens this time.

It asks me if I want to do a supplementary search and even when I hit "Yes" or "No", one notepad document comes up saying Startup Programs and then it seems like that is all that will ever come up. I waited a long time and it seems like nothing else happens at all and that's all that comes up.

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

*sigh* Sad tearing

This one failed too. I double-clicked it to run it and a black window popped up instantly and disappeared just as quickly just like it does for every other .exe I try to open. I tried pressing any key very quickly as it popped up like you said, but it didn't do anything. No logs were created. It reacted just like everything else..

Hello.
Rename exehelper from .com to .scr and then try running it, let me know what happens.

Yes! It's actually all fixed from that! Thanks so much! I'm going to run Malwarebytes to find any leftover stuff and I'll post again if the problem arises again. That exeHelper fixed the problem quite easily.

Nice one. Run MBAM and post the log when you can.
