Hello, guys and gals. This is my first post on this board and I come here looking for help.
Edit: First post updated.
I bought my computer well over a year ago and has been running smoothly until about a month ago. It started to slow down drastically and I have no idea what to do. This is what I have done.
What I have done
1. I ran Avast Home Edtion and it came up clean.
2. I ran Ad-Aware and it came up clean.
3. I ran Spy-bot Search and Destroy and it came up clean.
4.I have Windows Firewall enabled.
5. My hard drive sounds like a plane taking off.
6.I have no games, and about 4-5 gigs of Music/Pictures.
7. I have no disks, so I am not ready to run the RAM and Hard drive checkers. I'll get on that as soon as I know they are safe and get some disks.
8. Re-running AVG, just in case.
9. Increased the size of my Page File to "System Managing"
10. Deleted all of the Temp files with Disk Cleaner utility that comes with Microsoft.
11. I have no floppy drive.
12. All files are backed up.
13. Don't want to format unless it's necessary. Never formatted before, thus hesitant to do it.
14. Defragged once again.
15. Willing to provide pictures of the processing and add/remove programs dialogues.
16. Ran AVG, a common suggestion. Clean.
Results so far:
Increase in paging file sped it up a bit. Not much, but a bit.
System Specs
Gateway Gt5082
Processor- AMD Athlon 64 X2 2 GHz
Processor Speed- 2GHz
Installed Memory -2 GB(1.87Gb as of System screen in Control Panel) (DDR SDRAM)
Operating System-Microsoft Windows XP Media Center 2002 Edition Service Pack 2
Ram Speed- 400 Mhz
C: Drive capacity- 228Gb, 83% Free
D: Drive capacity- 4GB, 50% Free
Hard Drive RPM- 7500.
Hard Drive Capacity, full= 250GB. Where 30Gb went, I have no idea.
My problem:
It takes up to 3 minutes to open up a program such as Mozilla Firefox. And once any program opens, it begins to suck up to 50% of my CPU power, basing that on what my Windows Task Messenger tells me for the first minute of the program, causing a major lag spike. What should I do?
My brother got a message last night saying "Not enough Virtual memory". He's dumber than me at computers...I'm pretty good at CSS/xml, but that's it.
Hard Drive noises at random times. Sometimes during launch of PC, sometimes during it's return from Hibernation, sometimes it's at a launch of a simple program. It's like a freaking plane on a take off.
Possibility of my video card failing.
100% of CPU usage when copying more than 300mbs of files at the worst.
