Yahoo Purchases Arabic Web Portal

AMMAN, Jordan -- Yahoo Inc. has agreed to buy Maktoob.com Inc., which operates an Arabic Web portal that features news, business and sports updates, as well as mail and chat services.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The acquisition marks Yahoo's first foray into the Arab region, and the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Internet company said it now plans to develop Arabic versions of its Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger communication services.

When the deal closes, Amman-based Maktoob.com will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Yahoo. It will be headed by its current general manager, Ahmed Nassef, who will report to Keith Nilsson, Yahoo's senior vice president for emerging markets.
