Hi! I am new here so thank you all for this site-I love it already! So, my question is this: This antivirus-scanner8 keeps popping up on me..now I am smart enough not to download that mess, but I wonder if it is harmful to my system even if I didn't. Some advice please? I have win Vista and have AVG. Thanks in advance!

I have cleaned three this week, some customers that had downloaded it (what a mess) and one that hadn't. I ran Malwarebytes on the one that hadn't and it had no traces left although the web page was immune to AVG, IE8.0 etc. So the answer is, navigate away from the page (if you can) and then reboot. You should be find.

My advice. AVG is a weak anti-virus and I have stopped recommending it. Remove and replace with AVAST (still Free).

Subscribe to openDNS which blocks antivirus-scanner8.com. Follow their instructions and put their DNS servers in either you PC's settings or better still, you're router's settings. Then your entire household/network is safer.

Good luck.

Hello,

If the web page keeps popping up, that means you have Personal Antivirus on your computer.

Read this to remove Personal Antivirus: http://www.geekpolice.net/malware-removal-guides-f12/how-to-remove-personal-antivirus-delete-guide-t7526.htm

It popped up two days in a row, once each day trying to get me to download it....all scans show that everything is ok....but I just don't know. Can I run that just to be sure?

Yes, run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to double check.

Ok..so, I downloaded and ran a scan. It found one item from Adware.MyWebsearch it was in 1 registry key, I removed it. I am telling you this because I don't now much about all this, and hopefully you'll find it useful. Again, I thank you! And I have found an great new site to share!

Yep, you should be good to go. Let me just try to be clearer (I can get misunderstood sometimes).

The web page itself may have a number of pop-ups that make you think you're infected. If you ignore them and move away from the site (if it lets you) then, presently, you will be clean. You only have a problem if you download the thing and run it OR if the technology gets to the point (and your defenses weak enough) where the web-page downloads it and runs it for you.

Right now we are seeing a shift in reasons why this is happening, more and more con-men are creating these than previously as means of generating income. The income in this one is to sell you the fake product.

Therefor, right now, one of the best devices I have found is to subscribe (for FREE of course) to OpenDNS. Change your name server in your settings to there's and they filter out bad sites based on community input. By the time I learned about this threat, I couldn't get to it, it was already "banned".

Good luck.
