Hi, I'm currently unable to browse with my browser (firefox) although my internet is connected. I'm behind a hub with 4 other computers networked and the internet seems to be fine on all of them except for my main one. My brother recently updated the limewire on my comp without my consent and I think that may be what's causing all of this. I've tried to reset both my modem and router and the same problem still exists. Oh and I've ran malwarebytes and came up with nothing, but I still think it is some type of virus or malware that's causing this to happen. Thanks.

Hello,

Open CMD, Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults by typing: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults by typing: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Restart your PC.

If it doesn't work, download Winsock XP Fix from here, save it to your Desktop.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Double click on the exe on your Desktop.
Press the "Fix" button, then restart again.

See if you can connect now.

Thanks a lot doc, I tried both methods and the 2nd one seems to have done the trick, at least for now (I don't know if will stay on for long periods of time yet).

It's going a bit slow though doc, could this be the cause of malware? Like I said earlier, I had already tried running malwarebytes (the free version) and it came up with nothing. I ran the quick scan and not the full scan. Thanks.

If the Internet speed is slow, I don't think it has anything to do with malware, but if your computer is slow, perhaps.

Post a HijackThis log here, I can help you remove some startup items.

Okay so I left the comp on for a couple of hours (2-3) and the internet went off. Upon restart though it comes back on. Any idea on what's causing this? I can at least use the internet now on it for a while, but I'm still bothered by the fact that it turns off after a while since it shouldn't be doing that.

What's a hijack log? Do I need a certain program for that? Thanks.

Hello,

I can't be sure what is causing this, it may be caused by a certain software incompatibility.

Download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

One other thing. I have a 500 gig HDD and it's almost full, 5 gigs left of free space. Does that contribute heavily into the comp speed? When I restart the comp Firefox takes a while to start up, but once it's started it runs fine (except for the internet turning off after a while). Thanks.

Hello,

I see that you have Viewpoint running.

Viewpoint Media Player is a web browser plug-in that enables users to view 3D content and other media. It is bundled with AOL, AIM, versions of Netscape, certain Adobe products and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Viewpoint is also bundled with Adobe Atmosphere and hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.

Viewpoint Manager is used by various products of Viewpoint Corporation and is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Viewpoint Manager will access the internet and check for updates periodically. If it detects an update, it will automatically download and install the change. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting "Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager" -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Although, Viewpoint is not technically malware it is considered to be foistware since it is often installed without a user's knowledge or approval.

If you want to remove it, please follow the following steps:

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste or type: taskmgr

  • Under the Processes tab find the following tasks or processes:
    ViewpointService.exe
    ViewMgr.exe

  • Highlight and click "End Process".
  • Exit Task Manager.

Click on Start > Run and type: services.msc

  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab".
  • Scroll down the list and find the service called "Viewpoint Manager Service"
  • When you find the service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Disabled".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close any open windows.

Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > highlight and remove all references to Viewpoint - i.e. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Finally, delete the following folders if they still exist:
C:\Program Files\ViewManager\ <-- and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <-- and delete this folder

If you have Indexing enabled on that drive, it might contribute to the slowness. Also, what version of Firefox are you using?

So viewpoint is not really a necessary program to have? I have AIM so I think it might have came with that as you suggested. Should I go ahead and delete it then?

I'm not sure about the indexing part since I've never heard of it before.

I'm currently using 3.0.13 with a weather alert addon that I got from the firefox addon site. Thanks

Hello,

I have heard of Viewpoint disrupting internet connections before, however I am not entirely sure. So, it's up to you if you want to uninstall it.

By default Windows XP indexes files on your hard drive and stores them in memory to speed up its' built-in search. But if you rarely use Windows search, turn off indexing to free up memory and CPU horsepower for the files and applications you actually do use. A few simple how-to steps after the jump.

Turn off Indexing:
1. Open up "My Computer."
2. Right-click on your hard drive (usually "C:") and choose "Properties."
3. Uncheck the box at the bottom that reads "Allow Indexing Service to..."
4. Click OK, and files will be removed from memory. This removal may take a few minutes to complete.

Disable the service:
1. In the "Start" menu, choose "Run."
2. Type "services.msc" and press Enter.
3. Scroll-down to "Indexing Service" and double-click it.
4. If the service status is "Running", then stop it by pressing the "Stop" button.
5. To make sure this service doesn't run again, under "Startup Type:", choose "Disabled."

Windows search will still work if you perform these steps, but it will work more slowly than if indexing was enabled.

There is a later version of Firefox; 3.5.2. Grab it here: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

I just updated firefox to the version you posted. The thing that gets me though is that I've had that viewpoint thing ever since I've had AIM and that's been a while and I didn't have the problem of my internet suddenly turning off before. I figured it had to have been something recent that is causing this to happen (I figured it would be the limewire update my bro did) or some other update that he did that I have had no knowledge off.

Hello,

From your system restore points you can check what might be causing this, or perhaps even restore it to the time before this problem occurred.

I'll try that. Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it. I've at least gotten the internet back and running unlike before lol
