GPS specialist TomTom announced Monday that its new $99.99 iPhone app is now up for sale at the iTunes store. This uses iPhone's built-in GPS chip to provide users with real-time navigation directions.

The iPhone TomTom software offers most of the features found on stand-alone devices from the company. The iPhone app features both landscape and portrait views, points of interest, 3D and 2D maps, and both night and day views.

This spells the beginning of the end for standalone GPS. Not everywhere, but at least on dashboards, where a smartphone can now do everything a GPS can do and cost less than purchasing both.

The app uses a new technology called IQ Routes, said the company. Instead of suggesting the quickest route based on travel time, IQ Routes taps into the actual experiences of other TomTom drivers to determine the fastest route to take. TomTom said this technology lets people reach their destinations quicker up to 35 percent of the time.
