In 2007, My laptop got a spyware (I believe), which in result, hacked my dad's WoW account. He believed that I got a spyware, or any type of malware/virus/trojan. He installed Malwarebytes, AVG, Revo Uninstaller, Spyware Blaster, Spybot : Search and Destroy, and Advanced WindowsCare. He did a System Restore, and did all the program scans and even installed CC Cleaner, and did a Disk Defragmenter, and Disk Cleanup. Both the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter stopped at 50%. So he abandoned it and it was left untill May 2009. I ran all scans again and Malwarebytes found 50 infected items. I tryed installing Avast! but it wouldn't work. So I installed Hijackthis and got a Hijackthis log if you guys need it. Just skim through it if you see anything.

Hello.

You are running two antivirus', I see from the uninstall list you have Norton/Symantec installed, along with AVG. This is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause more problems. I would recommend that you remove Symantec to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Completely Uninstall Norton software using:

  • SymNRT.exe
Instructions

  1. Please download and save SymNRT.exe to your desktop.
  2. Close all programs and double click on the tool.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Restart the computer if asked.
  5. Then delete the SymNRT.exe tool from your desktop.
  6. Open the Program Files folder on your local disk ( normally C: )
  7. Find and delete the following folders (if present):

    • Norton AntiVirus
    • Norton Internet Security
    • Norton SystemWorks
    • Norton Personal Firewall

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    Ask Toolbar
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

After that, post a new Hijack This log.

I doubt it's infected anyway, MBAM came up clean using the latest version and Hijack This looks good.

Well I turned it on this morning and a window popped up about Protection System. As usual, I looked it up, and saw some 'Protection System removal guide' and I was thinking it was something harmful. I unplugged the laptop and ran in safe mode and now I'm doing a AVG Scan. Any suggestions?

Has AVG removed it already? there's no malicious processes and the log looks ok.

Hmm I guess so... but now Mbam won't start, and I have reinstalled it and installed it. Oh, and I was planning on formatting the Local Disk/OS afterward. Is it a good idea?

Nah. I bet a rootkit is regenerating it.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Slow Laptop CF_download_FF

    Slow Laptop CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Slow Laptop Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Slow Laptop Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
