Hello,

I was surfing the web the other day when firefox suddenly froze. I tried to end the program and it didn't work so I shut down the computer and rebooted. Now any time I try to open an internet browser (internet explorer or firefox) it loads the home page and then becomes unresponsive. The window also will not close even when I go into task manager and click end task. When I try to open any of the larger files on the computer (windows media player, McAfee) they won't open. However smaller files like paint/calculator/notepad open and function fine. System restore doesn't work as well. It will go through the whole process and reboot the computer but after windows loads the restore window pops up and says the restore couldn't be completed and that nothing has been changed. I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-malware program which found a few things and deleted them but when I rebooted the unresponsiveness was still there. The only way I can get the computer to be at all functional is by starting it in debugging mode which is how I am posting this. I am posting the Hijack This log file below. Any help would be great!!

Hello,

I've deleted the files in the Hijack This list and run the MBAM scan. I'll post the log below. When MBAM rebooted the computer into the normal running mode, the big programs were still saying they were unresponsive after partially loading. However when I opened Task Manager I noticed that the unresponsive firefox window I had opened was listed in the Applications tab twice (kind of like it listed that two unresponsive windows were open when there was only one window open). I also noticed that when trying to shut down in the normal mode it always pops up that the application AUSUpdateWTitle is unresponsive. Thanks for all your help so far and I hope the two things I observed were helpful!

Hello.
I wanted an MBAM scan because the items in Hijack This gave me enough reason to, because one of your IE settings was set an an adware website and had removed, but I wanted to see if MBAM found anything.

Lets see if this helps deal with the slowness, should at least take some weight off.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

I just tried to open firefox again and it loaded the page except for some of the ads and then froze again. =[ And the task manager still says that there are two firefox windows open when there is only one. Is there anything else I can do to fix it?

What version of Firefox have you got installed?
To find: Go to the help menu > About Mozilla Firefox

It will show the version number under the big orange word that says Mozilla.

It says version 3.0.11. Is there some weird thing that would cause firefox to only work in debugging mode? Well actually most things on the computer will only work in debugging mode so I guess that's a stupid question. Haha.

descriptionUnresponsive Computer EmptyRe: Unresponsive Computer

3.0.11 is old now.
Go back into the help menu again, this time, select "Check for updates..."

Firefox will alert you of version 3.5 update and will want you to download it, so do so, allow it to install 3.5.

See if this fixes the bug. Smile...

I updated and rebooted and the same things happened - no big programs would load, the computer thinks there are two of the same thing open, etc. Its just so confusing because everything else about the computer like the time it takes to load and the responsiveness when clicking on the start bar are very fast. But the internet and media player will start and then freeze. I wish I could just turn debugging mode into normal mode because then I wouldn't have any problems!! Does it matter that the scans I'm running are being done from debugging mode? Because I don't think they would run in normal mode.

I've tried to run the scans in normal boot mode, but it always becomes unresponsive and when you check task manager it says unresponsive and thinks two windows are open, or if you try windows media player it will become nonresponsive and task manager will say two media players are open and unresponsive. While the programs load and are still responding task manager will only show one window or program open, as soon as it becomes unresponsive it will say that there are two unresponsive programs etc. I can only use the computer in debugging mode. When im in normal mode most programs will become unresponsive before they even finish loading ie. internet explorer. I would appreciate anything else you can think of for me to try! Thanks for your help so far!!

Hello.
May I suggest uninstalling Mcafee? that is probably the cause, see here:

Uninstall mcafee, see what happens.

Hi! Sorry It took so long! I uninstalled McAfee and installed the free version of avast. And in normal boot mode It still won't completely load the home page and once it becomes unresponsive task manager thinks two windows are open of internet explorer. don't understand why things will work in debugging mode but not in normal mode! Its pretty frustrating!! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all your help so far, hope you can help me resolve this problem.

Hello,

There probably is something interrupting your connection. Do you have any firewall installed?

Hello,

I've tried disabling any firewall I could find. Its still the same problems happening unfortunately. When I start the computer in normal mode and try to open the internet or any other large program (i.e windows media player) the program begins to load and then freezes up. And the task manager still thinks that there are two of the same unresponsive program open when there is only one. Any other thoughts?

Hello,

Can you try this one another browser such as Google Chrome or Opera? As for the unresponsive program, end it's process and restart it and see how it goes.

Hi! It doesn't matter which browser I use, I've tried firefox, internet explorer and now google chrome. The computer in normal boot mode will start to open the browser, when its partially loaded the program becomes unresponsive and when you click on task manager it thinks two programs are open when there is only one open. But if you boot into debugging mode everything works fine no matter what browser I use. If you can figure out whats going on with this computer I would appreciate it!! Thanks

Hello,

Ok, let's try this. Start >> Run >> Msconfig >> Select Diagnostic startup and restart your computer. Try running the browsers again.
